Bar (Karlsruhe)
recycled rubber, beechwood, polycarbonat

My goal in designing this bar was to break up the difficult floor plan with a large round bar. It redefines the space as a central element. No matter where you sit at it, you can see everything that is going on around you from every seat.

The round counter is interrupted by a massive concrete column, which in turn is supported by a reinforced concrete beam. This supporting structure, on which the entire building ultimately rests, should not be hidden or concealed in the bar design. On the contrary: only wrapped in transparent panels that are illuminated from the inside, the large girder becomes the defining lighting element of the room.
All the fixtures in the room are only ever to be found where the architecture dictates anyway: Around the windows. They are frames to the outside and offer seating. Like the counter, they are made of recycled car tyres, similar in appearance to terrazzo but soft to the touch and pleasant to sit on.
